Company Profile

Standby is a professional company that has been operating since 1996. The Company's core business focus is Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery. The Company specialises in providing independent advice to customers. Work undertaken includes risk assessments, business impact analysis, development of recovery strategies and the production of personalised business continuity plans and specilised consulting associated with Business Continuity Management.

The Company consults for most areas of business including IT and since its inception, Standby has worked with a wide variety of organisations ranging from government, manufacturing, educational, financial, food production and service organisations.

Standby operates both locally in the New Zealand market and internationally. It has worked on assignments in Australia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and the Pacific Islands. The Company has offices in Dunedin in New Zealand and a branch office in the Kindom of Bahrain.

Even though standby's roots are in information technology, the consulting work it now carries out covers all aspects of Business Continuity Management. To reflect this the company changed its name from Standby Computing Services Limited to Standby Consulting Limited in February 2007. Along with this name change the domain name for emails and web site changed to StandbyConsulting.com

Staff Profiles

Sam Mulholland (CBCP, MNZCS) - Managing Director

SamSam is a Certified Business Continuity Planner from the Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII). He has more than 30 years experience in the computer industry, eighteen of which involved managing high-profile computer centres in the banking field. It was during this time, that Sam became involved in Disaster Recovery.

Sam is a Certified Business Continuity Planner (CBCP) a certification gained through the Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII) in the USA. To obtain this certification applicants have to meet very strict criteria. These include a minimum of two years cumulative business continuity planning over the last ten years, and passing a formal examination with a 75% pass mark. The holder of the qualification must keep their knowledge levels up-to-date, prove they ae active in the industry and seen revalidation every two years.

Sam has also attended seiminars and business continuity conferences in the USA and Australia and as a recognised business continuity planning specialists regularly speaks to conferences in New Zealand.

Since establishing Standby, Sam has worked on a variety of customer sites carrying out risk assessments, business impact assessments, designed high-level recovery strategies and plans and implemented those solutions .

Sam is now recognised as an authority on Business Continuity Management in New Zealand and regularly speaks at conferences on this topic.

Denis Usherwood

DenDenis has over 30 years experience working in the New Zealand IT Industry. The majority of this time was with Databank Systems (now EDS) where Denis worked in a number of computer sites around New Zealand, carrying out a variety of operational, supervisory and management roles for the organisation.

For the past 9 years Denis has worked for Standby. In this time he has expanded his knowledge, has been involved in many projects and has been active in all aspects of the business continuity process. In particular, Denis is regularly involved in site risk assessments, business impact analysis, crisis management processes and the development of business continuity and disaster recovery plans. He has worked on business continuity projects for customers in Australia and New Zealand and is often involved in the production of reports and the development of plans for customers.

Reg Hume (MCP)

regReg joined Standby in April 2004 and has more than 38 years experience in the IT industry. in Australia, United Kingdom and some third world countries. Reg has worked in a variety of roles ranging from programming to IT management in a diverse group of industries including finance and investment, public service, manufacturing and mining. Even in his management roles, he has maintained his interest and proficiency in programming.

Within Standby, Reg is regularly involved in the more technical solutions of business continuity planning and plan testing.

Janet Osborne (BAppSci (IT) Dip. IS&T Management, NZLEC)

janetJanet joined the Standby team in December 2002 and has worked on a variety of projects throughout New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands. She has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree majoring in IT and a Diploma in IS&T Management and is skilled in business management, strategic planning, project management and systems and business analysis. She also brings with her business experience from working in a variety of business-related roles including several years as a qualified legal executive. Janet has carried out many business impact analysis projects and developed numerous business continuity plans. Using this knowledge plus her skills in written communication, Janet is often used in a QA and analytical role and is regularly involved in determining the impact a disaster will have on a client’s business.

Monique Rennhard

MoniqueMonique has an extensive Aviation background. As a young women set up and operated her own Air Charter service in New Zealand working as a commercial pilot. For the last 10 years she has been working in Zurich, Switzerland for Swissair Flight Support as well as Lufthansa Systems Flight Navigation. Her role was Customer Support Manager, oveerseeing major worldwide Airlines' flight Navigation Systems (IT Based) and co-ordinating with Amercian based engineering companies, such as Honewell, implementing the Navigation requirements of her clients.

Natural progression lead Monique into the Sales and Marketing Department where her role as a Contract and Proposal Manager for existing and new clients depended heavily on her overall knowledge of the Flight Navigation needs of the airlines. She monitored contractual requirements and co-ordinated between various departments of the company's global offices and clients to ensure delivery of services.

Monique has relocated to Bahrain and brings to Standby her valuable account management and business experience. Her role is Client Services Manager and focus's on key account management of our existing clients and project management.

Monique carries both a New Zealand and Swiss passport, has residency permit for the Kingdom of Bahrain and speaks both English and German.

Associate Consultants

Besides the above personnel Standby has association with several other consultants working in the fields that Standby works in and can, if required, contract these consultants to assist or provide technical advice.
